P0522 Oil pressure sensor: signal or voltage too low
P0522 means: Oil pressure sensor: signal or voltage too low. The computer monitors oil pressure, level or temperature. Don't drive until the car has been checked. The engine could be damaged. The most common repair costs about €45–90 in Estonia, depending on make and model.
What it means
The computer monitors oil pressure, level or temperature. If the oil system isn't working properly, the engine can be seriously damaged very quickly. The signal voltage is too low. Usually a wire is broken, a connector is loose or a wire is shorted to ground.
What you may notice
- Oil light on or flashing
- The engine may rattle
- Engine light on
What could be wrong
- 1Connector loose, damp or corroded · Wiring or connector repair €45–90
- 2Wire broken or shorted to ground · Wiring or connector repair €45–90
- 3Faulty oil pressure sensor · Sensor replacement €80–160
- 4Engine computer fault (rare) · Control unit check and software €150–300
Repair difficulty: Moderate
What you can check yourself
First look at the connector and wiring: anything loose, melted or green with corrosion? Stop and check the oil level straight away. If the oil light is on, don't drive on. You can check the simple things yourself, but the repair is best done in a workshop.
How we fix it
- We read the fault data on the diagnostic tool and check whether the fault is constant
- We measure the circuit's supply, ground and signal
- We repair the wire or replace the connector
- If the wiring is fine, we replace the oil pressure sensor
