Power steering light on: what to do

Updated:

The power steering light means the assistance has stopped or is reduced. You can still steer, but it takes much more effort, especially when parking. Drive gently and keep the speed down. On electric power steering a low battery voltage, charging fault or bad connector is often to blame. On hydraulic systems check the power steering fluid level too.

Electric or hydraulic?

Most newer cars have electric power steering: an electric motor and control unit on the column or the steering rack. Older and larger vehicles often have a hydraulic system driven by the engine belt, with its own fluid.

If there is a power steering fluid reservoir under the bonnet, the system is most likely hydraulic. The owner's manual will confirm it.

Common causes

Electric: low battery voltage or a charging fault, a corroded connector or wire, the steering angle sensor, less often the motor or control unit. The system draws a lot of current, so a weak battery often shows up here first.

Hydraulic: low or leaking fluid, a slipping or broken belt, a worn pump. You will often hear a whine when turning the wheel.

What you can do yourself

Stop somewhere safe, switch the ignition off for a few minutes and restart. If the light goes out and the steering is light again, the fault was intermittent, but the code is stored. Get it read soon.

If the battery light is on at the same time, the cause is probably charging. Don't switch the engine off on the road unless you must.

Want a definite answer?

Bring the car to our workshop in Estonia for diagnostics. We read the fault codes, test the sensors and tell you what is wrong.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to drive with heavy steering?

A short distance, gently, yes: the steering is still mechanically connected. But heavy steering catches you out in car parks and tight bends. Don't drive far or fast.

Why does the power steering light come on and go off?

Often low voltage: a weak battery, a cold morning or a poor contact. The control unit switches assistance off to protect itself and back on after a restart.

Does the steering angle sensor need calibrating after an alignment?

On many cars, yes. If the light came on after an alignment or steering work, have the sensor recalibrated with a diagnostic tool.

How much does a diagnosis cost?

Diagnostics cost €45/h, the price depends on the job. We check the battery, charging and connectors first, as they are the cheapest causes.
