What it means

Too little fuel or too much air is getting into the engine. The engine computer has already added as much fuel as it is allowed to.

What could be wrong

  1. 1Air leak: a hose, intake gasket or crankcase breather
  2. 2Mass air flow sensor reads less air than is actually going in
  3. 3Weak fuel pump or clogged fuel filter
  4. 4Clogged injector

What you can check yourself

Listen at idle for a hissing sound. Check the hoses after the air filter. You can check the simple things yourself, but the repair is best done in a workshop.

How we fix it

  1. We smoke-test the intake
  2. We check fuel pressure and the mass air flow sensor
  3. We replace the leaking hose, gasket or sensor
