Brake pads: when to replace them and what the light means

Updated:

The brake pad light means the pads have reached their wear limit: the sensor in the pad has worn through. The brakes still work, but replace the pads soon. If you keep driving, the pad's metal backing grinds on the disc, stopping distance gets longer and the discs need replacing too. If the pedal feels soft or the red brake light is on, don't drive.

Signs of worn pads

The pad wear light is on, the brakes squeal or make a metallic grinding noise, or there are deep grooves on the disc. Many manufacturers recommend replacing pads when about 2–3 mm of friction material is left (the exact limit is in the manufacturer's data).

If the car pulls to one side under braking or the steering wheel shakes, the discs or callipers probably need attention too.

How we replace them

Pads are always replaced per axle, both sides at once. We measure the discs as well: if a disc is below the manufacturer's minimum or warped, discs and pads are replaced together.

The wear sensor is usually single-use, so it is replaced with the pads. Cars with an electric parking brake need it put into service mode with a diagnostic tool before the rear pads are changed, or the motor can be damaged.

Pad wear light and red brake light are different

A yellow or amber pad light shows wear. The red brake light means the parking brake is on, the brake fluid is low or there is a fault in the brake system. With the red light and a soft pedal, don't drive.

Want a definite answer?

Bring the car to our workshop in Estonia for diagnostics. We read the fault codes, test the sensors and tell you what is wrong.

Frequently asked questions

How long can you drive with the pad wear light on?

There is no exact distance, it depends on how you drive. Don't leave it until next month. If you hear metal grinding, the pad is already gone and the disc is being damaged.

Do the discs need replacing with the pads?

Not always. We measure disc thickness and check the surface. If a disc is below the limit or grooved, it is replaced with the pads.

Why do my brakes squeal?

Squealing often comes from the wear indicator, dust or glazed pads. Metal grinding means the pad is worn through.

Will worn brakes fail the inspection?

Pads and discs worn through are a defect at the inspection. Have the brakes checked beforehand.

How much does a pad change cost?

It depends on the car and whether discs are needed. Labour is €45/h, the price depends on the job.
